Welcome to NORWAY
an extra service of European City Guide / ECG

Information about NORWAY Norway is the most northerly Scandinavian country and is truly a land of contrasts. The northern region enjoys the brightest midnight summer sun and the very darkest of winters. The country is about two-thirds mountains and its much indented coastline is one of the most rugged and longest in the world with some 50,000 islands offshore. The rhythm of Norwegian life and its folklore are both shaped by the changing seasons, which are marked throughout the year with festivals and celebrations. Seafood is of the premium quality, and game and meat have a distinct flavour. The quality of life is arguably amongst the highest in the world, and much is being done to ensure that this is maintained after its oil and gas reserves are depleted. Its economy is prosperous and export based, making it an important European trade centre.

Climate
Climate: The largest area of lowland is around Oslo and this is the driest and warmest part of the country in summer. The interior highlands have an Arctic climate in winter with snow, strong winds, and severe frosts, but during fine spells in summer the daytime temperatures can rise quite high with long hours of sunshine. By contrast the coastal areas have comparatively mild conditions in winter, because the warm Atlantic water of the Gulf Stream reaches to the extreme north of Norway. This keeps the sea from freezing and maintains open harbours throughout the year. On occasions in winter strong cold winds blow down into the fiords from the snow-covered highlands.
